Learning how to Set a Goal for your Network Marketing Business is vital to your success. I had a professor who once said, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time” and I never forgot it! So knowing where you want to take your business has a lot to do with whether or not you get there.

I remember a HUGE goal I set for my network marketing business a few years ago. My company was offering a trip to MAUI!! Hawaii had been a dream of mine and my husband since before we were married. When I first wrote my goal down… my goal to go to Hawaii… I literally laughed out loud. I just knew I would never get there but thought “Hey, a girl can dream!”

But then I sat down with an amazing mentor of mine, an Executive coach within my brand space, Lane Lake, and she asked me a question that’ll I never forget. “How do you plan to get there?” It’s then that I realized… I didn’t have a goal, I had a dream. Until I had made that dream my GOAL, it was never going to happen.

Shocker right? I didn’t have a plan!!! Once I started to write out what it would take to get there and what steps I would need to take to make it happen, I started to believe even more that it was actually possible. To this day, I still have that notebook I was planning from! Planning for my success! Planning to go to Maui!!!

How to Set a Goal for your Network Marketing Business

How do you know what your goal “should” be? It should start by asking yourself some tough questions to help you pin point your ideal goal within your brand space. Maybe it’s a specific sales title, a leadership title, or sales level. But these goals aren’t as important as getting back to the root of why you started this business in the first place? Was it to make some extra cash, was it to be a stay at home mom, was if for a discount, or was it for a full time residual income? So let’s start with some simple questions.

  1. How much money do I want to make? Sounds simple right. But so powerful. Remember why you started this business? Now think about how much money it would take each week, each month, each year to make that “why” a reality. For me, it was to be a stay at home mom. That was my dream! 15 years later, my “Why” has grown and turned into so much more!
  2. What do I need to make that happen? Now that you know how much money you want to make. Take a look at your brand’s compensation plan. What sales level, or leadership title would you need to be at to make your earnings goal a reality?

Break it down in to SMART Goal

Ask yourself is your goal Smart? What I mean by that is… Is it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound? Knowing how to set a goal for your network marketing business only works if your goal is SMART!

How to Set a smart Goal for your network marketing business

Specific – In my brand space as an Avon Representative, my goal might be to achieve the President’s Club Sales Achievement Level, or to advance my Leadership title go Bronze Executive, or to achieve the next Destination Avon Trip.

Measurable – Can I measure my goal with analyzed numbers specific to me. Do I know how much I need in sales each campaign or each month to meet my goal. Do I know how many new Avon team members I need to grow by?

Achievable – Is my goal achievable? Am I being realistic here? Am I giving myself a goal that I know I will count myself out of tomorrow because it is so far out of reach?

Relevant – Is my goal relevant to my brand space. Maybe your ultimate goal is to “be a stay at home mom” or the “create a full time income”. Great – but get more relevant than that. How much money do you need to make each month to make that goal a reality. What title do you need? How much do you need to do in sales?

Time Bound – Did you give yourself a clock? Make your goal something you can count down to. Look forward to. And check of your list at a specific point in time.

Look at your Past Performance

Don’t skip this step! Taking a look at the prior year and evaluating how you performed helps you analyze what you were doing during that time.

For example, if your business was in the slumps last January, what were you doing that month that wasn’t working? Do less of that! What were you doing that was working? Do more of it! And what you were not doing that you should have been doing that you know has worked in the past? Start doing it again!

What is the DMO that will help you Achieve your Goals

Now that you have identified what your big goal is for your network marketing business – Break it down! What is your DMO (Daily Method of Operation). Success comes with the small actions you take every day. So break down those steps into smaller achievable ACTIONS that will pay off! What are the steps you can take within this timeframe to help you achieve you smart goal. What tasks should you be doing Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, and Annually in order to accomplish your goal.

Maybe it’s more consistent social media posts? Is it engaging with your followers in a more genuine way? Is it following up with your customers? Is it finding more customers? Learn more ways to achieve your goals with this complete guide to giving your business an online presence!

Get Organized

Get a planer. Stay organized and focused on your goals. Whether that’s an icalendar, a paper planner, or an app. Do what works for you – what you will stick with. Mark down the steps you need to take to make your goal achievable throughout your calendar to help you stay on track and remind yourself why you’re doing this. Write down your DMO throughout the whole year!

Keep your goal in front of you! Maybe this means making a dream board (on poster board or digital), write it on post it notes and keep it on your computer or your bathroom mirror, etc. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you stay focused on your goal!

But Remember, your journey is different than anybody else’s. Respect your own Journey by Celebrating others in your brand space. And they will do the same for you!

Mentor Others to Achieve their Own Goals

Are you a team leader? Your Role is to help your team members learn how to set goals for themselves. Your own goals for them might not align with what their personal goals are – so instead of pushing your own agenda on them – support them as they realize their own goals. Then show them the resources and tools as you support them in achieving their own goal. Learning how to be a great Mentor and Upline leader can help your team achieve their goals – and in my experience, when your individual team members achieve their goals, you achieve yours as the leader as well.
